A website conversion happens when a user completes a desired action on your website, like making a purchase or filling out a lead generation contact form. Every business website is built to generate conversions.
There are two types of website conversions:
Micro-conversions happen when a step toward your end goal is achieved, like subscribing to a newsletter, downloading an ebook, or watching a product video (i.e. events that occur before a macro-conversion).
Macro-conversions happen when your end goal is achieved, such as a sale, a new paid subscriber, or a completed contact form.
Some examples of how micro-conversions contribute to macro-conversions include
Macro-conversion: making a purchase
Micro-conversions: interacting with a TikTok video, downloading product information, entering card details
Macro-conversion: completing a registration of signup process
Micro-conversions: landing on the registration page, starting to fill out the form, verifying contract information
Macro-conversion: subscribing to a service
Micro-conversions: taking a free trial, reading terms and conditions, requesting more information
Conversion at Site, Page, and Funnel Level
There are three units of analysis worth running in parallel. Each answers a different question and skipping any of them produces a CRO program with blind spots.
Site-level conversion is the broadest measure. Total conversions on the site, divided by total visitors, over a chosen window. It is useful as a directional health metric and a board reporting number, and almost useless for shipping fixes. A site-level rate that climbs from 2.2% to 2.6% might be a real experience improvement, a paid-channel pause, an organic algorithm update, or a seasonal retail spike. The number alone does not say.
Page-level conversion is the rate at which a specific surface converts visitors who land on or pass through it. Pricing page, blog post, comparison page, partner landing page. Page-level rates are where most surface-specific fixes show up. The pricing-tier reorder I opened with showed up cleanly at the page level and would have been invisible blended into the site rate.
Funnel-level conversion is the rate at which a specific multi-step flow completes end to end. Checkout, signup, demo request. Funnel-level rates are where step-by-step diagnostics live, because the interesting question is not “what is the funnel rate?” but “which step is leaking, and why?” A 38% checkout completion rate tells you almost nothing. A 38% completion rate with a 71% drop on the shipping calculator tells you exactly where to spend the week.
The three layers reinforce each other. Site-level shows the trend. Page-level shows the surface. Funnel-level shows the step. A mature CRO team reports all three and never lets the conversation collapse to the headline rate. The headline rate is the answer to a question nobody actually asked.
A website conversion maturity model
Teams asking how to “get better” at CRO usually need a map rather than a tactic. There are five stages, each unlocking the next. Skipping ahead produces the “we ran a lot of tests but nothing moved” outcome.
Stage one: hunches and hot fixes. The team identifies friction by anecdote, ships fixes by intuition, and measures success by site-level conversion rate. Real value, narrow scope. Most teams sit here longer than they should.
Stage two: measured surfaces. The team has identified the highest-traffic and highest-intent surfaces, instruments page-level and funnel-level conversion, and reports both alongside the headline rate. CRO conversations start to ground in specific pages rather than abstract claims about the site.
Stage three: connected replay. The team pairs every funnel and surface metric with session replay, so the question of “why are these visitors not converting?” has a watchable answer. Weekly replay review becomes a fixture, and findings feed directly into the backlog with replay URLs attached.
Stage four: structured experimentation. The team runs A/B tests on changes plausibly worth measurable lift, defines significance and runtime up front, and keeps a public log of wins, losses, and learnings. Hypothesis quality improves because the team has a track record to learn from.
Stage five: AI-assisted prioritization. At scale, no team can watch enough sessions or run enough tests manually. AI session analysis clusters friction patterns across hundreds of thousands of users, quantifies the business impact, and ranks the issues most worth addressing this week. CRO meetings shift from “let’s look at the dashboard” to “let’s evaluate the AI’s top three recommendations.” The team’s morning starts with a hypothesis rather than a research project.
Map yourself honestly. Most teams sit between stages two and three because the surface-level tagging is incomplete or replay is treated as a debug tool rather than a CRO input. That is where to invest first. Stages four and five compound from there.
